What Really Grinds my Gears: NBA Edition E-mail

Yes, I know most of you who write for or read this site hate the NBA. However, an overwhelming majority of American sports fans prefer the NBA to the NHL as do I. However, I have some anger and frustration with both my beloved Knicks and the NBA in general right now. So without further adieu....

5) How is the Heat this medicore?- No matter what criticisms you might put forth about Dwayne Wade such as his injury history and his inability to make his whole team good (Lebron as counter example), he is clearly a top 5 player in the sport. Jermaine O'Neall, while not what he once was, is still a good NBA player who is a tough cover for a bulky 4 or a smallish 3. Michael Beasley was one of the most dominant players I have ever seen as a college freshman and looks brilliant at times in the pros. However, this team is barely surviving at the bottom of a pathetic Eastern Conference.  I find this hard to believe. Either Wade doesn't have that Lebronish ability to raise the level of his teammates and/or Eric Spolestra is a horrible coach. The Heat should easily be a top 6 team in this joke of a conference.

4) The Celtics is the worst elite team in the NBA-There are about 6 teams or so who can realistically say they can win the NBA title this year: (1) The Lakers, (2) Cavs, (3) Mavericks, (4) Nuggets (5) Magic and the Celtics (6). The first 5 teams all have great players in their primes, dynamic offensive forces, and are still on the rise. However, Boston is clearly a contender more for its resume than the way it has played this year. Rasheed Wallace has been a disaster, Garnett is not even half of what he was 2 seasons ago, and Ray Allen looks shot during many of the games his team has played the last few months. Yes, Pierce is still scary and Rondo is a great defender and solid all around point guard; however, watching the Celtics barely beat the Knicks and get embarrassed by Orlando and Denver in recent weeks has made me realize this Celtics team is done as a truly legit contender.  I guess you have to take the 1 title that the massive series of trades Ainge pulled off 2.5 years ago has netted but in a year or two the Celtics will be left with an aging Pierce and Rajon Rondo and nothing else.

3) The soft cap is moronic- I prefer the hard cap over any system in sports. It is the most easy way to generate parity and therefore give hope to fans of all of the league's teams. While no cap is certainly unfair to organizations like the Twins who consistently produce winners but can't win it all, it at least creates a David and Goliath situation that creates excitement in the playoffs. The soft cap to me is the worst of both worlds. It doesn't allow teams the flexibility to revamp their rosters from year to year after ill-fated signings yet it also doesn't guarantee a truly equal chance for small market teams to succeed since team's can go way over the cap by resigning their own players to virtually whatever price tag the player desires. I just hate that, yes the Knicks, had to be  awful for 10 years because it signed Allan Houston to a ridiculous contract. In the NFL, Houston would have stuck around for 3-5 years and been cut in 2003 or so. This would have avoided the string of ill fated desperation trades by Zieke and allowed Knicks fans to watch a watchable team the last 6 or 7 seasons. I just think the NBA, like the NHL, should shift to a hard cap.

NOW THE KNICKS SECTION

2) Mike D'Antoni absolutely sucks- Seriously, this guy is a moron. He communicates to his players worse than White Boy Senior does to Mrs. White Boy Senior about the specifics of upcoming weekend plans. He acts baffled when media correctly question if he talked to a respected veteran like Chris Duhon about his impending benching. Mike feels he doesn't have to massage any egos or you know TEACH DEFENSE!  I think I could even live with the no defense thing if he knew how to draw up an end of quarter play. I know idiots like Nate Robinson and Al Harrington (I like you guys as people but you are not bright) are not the most teachable types but I'm sure someone like Riley, Daily (G-d rest his soul) and Jackson would get these guys to execute in these situations.  I know that some of these guys may tune Mike out because they know he won't be around next year (thanks knicks insider pal) but that's not a valid excuse for D'Antoni to lean on. I have zero faith in this guy even if we land some big time free agents which lead me to......

1) Be happy no matter what; assuming the Knicks sign 2 max players- I can see it now, people calling Joe and Evan, Mike and Sommers complaining that all we got this off season was Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh. You people need to get some perspective. Do you realize how good these guys are?? Do you realize how much better they are than even a borderline all star like D Lee? These two guys would instantly catapult the Knicks into the top 5 of the Eastern Conference and guarantee playoff runs for the next 5 or so years. Considering our team has recorded exactly zero postseason wins since May of 2001, I'd be beyond ecstatic about this. Would I prefer getting Lebron and Bosh over Johnson and Bosh? Of course, but beggars can't be choosers and make no mistake Knicks fans, we are beggars.

A) T-Mac doesn't net any on court results- Bonus Mini Rant- I guess I didn't expect T-Mac to really change the culture of the team nor did I expect some kind of miracle 24-5 finish to the season. However, I thought the Knicks might be able to win a few in a row upon his arrival and get me excited about watching the rest of the games. However, despite his great first game against the Durants, the team has still lost his first three games and has done so in fairly embarrassing fashion. I guess that T-Mac trade just brought me about 48 hours of excitement.

Couldn't agree more with anything you said here...

Though I will say one thing-- after being superstar-deprived after how many years now, seeing T-Mac in a Knicks jersey makes me Jizz In My Pants.
