The Capitals gave a boost to their defense by adding Joe Corvo from Carolina, sending Brian Pthier and prospect Oskar Osala. Update: the Capitals also dealt a second round pick to the Hurricanes.
Corvo is an offensive minded defenseman but is prone to mistakes in his own end. GM George McPhee however decided he was an upgrade over Pothier, giving up prospect Osala, a 4th round pick in 2006 who plays wing. While Corvo will help an already potent offense in Washington, he does not address their bigger need of a reliable defensive blue liner.
Pothier has not been the same since suffering a major concussion. A reliable defender when Washington first signed him, he has been unable to find his game after the injury, now prone to poor decisions. Washington needed to clear cap space to take on Corvo, so the Caps are raelly renting Corvo for the price of Osala. A second round pick has fetched defenseman by themselves at the deadline, and I do not consider Corvo as much as an upgrade over them to throw in a prospect (though Carolina could have demanded more due to taking salary back).
Both defenders are unrestricted free agents after the year, so dont expect either to be wearing these uniforms after the summer.
Winner: Carolina. I do not think Corvo is the kind of help Washington needs, and they gave up a prospect and pick to get him, even if Osala is not highly rated.
