Patriots Week 15 Recap: Dammit

The Patriots have now lost their second straight game and fallen to 9-5 on the season.

This was just a flat out bad game all the way around. Everyone on the offense looked slow and old. Julian, Gronk, and Tom are all getting up there in age and each one has been roughed up this season. James White wasn’t utilized well, especially against a linebacking core that couldn’t keep up with him. Plain and simple: putting up 10 points on a Steelers defense that allowed the Oakland Raiders to score 25 points is like getting rejected in a pick up game by a kid in a wheelchair. It's flat out embarrassing and should never happen no matter what. The running backs were having a good game, but the Pats only ran the ball 19 times in comparison to 36 pass attempts. All three running backs averaged over 5 yards per carry. It wasn’t like the Pats were down by two touchdowns, they could have ran the ball more, and should have.

Tom Brady has no confidence in his offensive line and that was epitomized in this game. Anyone with a good eye can tell he can still sling it. But it was like Brady was counting to three and then chucking the ball away. The man is 41 and should be airing on the side of caution when it comes to taking hits. If he is on his back, so is the team.

The lone bright spot on Sunday was the defense, which did a remarkable job bouncing back after last week. After allowing 34 points to the Miami Dolphins, they buckled down and only gave up seventeen to the Steelers, thanks to 2 interceptions from Duron Harmon.

The Patriots played classic bend-don't-break defense. Let them get all the yards they want, just don't give up points. Pass rush continues to be a problem for the Patriots; the team only tallied up 2 sacks on the day. This is clearly the biggest problem for the Patriots because I am confident the offense is going to turn it around. All season long I find myself screaming at my television for someone, anyone, to get within 3 yards of the quarterback. I like the concept Belichick does of rotating guys in and out so the line is always fresh, but it isn't working this year. Adrian Clayborn was the big free agent signing for this defense and he isn’t doing anything. In fact the man didn’t even record a single tackle. Zero tackles. Unacceptable.

Let me be clear: I am in no way shape or form giving up on this season because this is still the Patriots. They still have the greatest Quarterback and coach of all time. Rest assured, they will be able to figure this one out and put together a plan that can win playoff games. Their record is now 9-5 and they really should end 11-5 with the final two games against the Bills and Jets at home. The Pats can still get a first round bye, but they are going to need help.
