Super Bowl 53 is right around the corner; it’s time to get the last bets of the season out there.
New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Rams
The Pats and Rams have proven this postseason they are the real deal and deserve to be in the Super Bowl. I just have to give the edge to the Patriots. This purely comes down to experience; the schemes they run work time after time, and the Patriots have won 5 Super Bowl rings to show for it. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady know what they need to do to win the big game.
In the eight Super Bowls Tom Brady has played in, he has thrown for 18 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. That’s a better than a 3 to 1 ratio. He holds practically all the Super Bowl records for a quarterback: touchdowns (18), passing yards (2576), completions (235). He is only going to add to those stats on Sunday and further his case for the greatest of all time.
On the other side is Jared Goff. Goff’s passer rating so far in the playoffs is 78.7, very pedestrian and not exactly popping off the page. Goff has only thrown for one touchdown in his 2 playoff games this season. He’s reliant on the running game, which didn’t exactly show up against the Saints.
These two teams have been predominantly running teams for a good portion of the season. Todd Gurley is quite clearly the best running back in the league. While rookie back Sony Michel has done nothing but impress fans around the NFL. Pretty evenly matched: the Rams ranked 3rd in total rushing yards this season (1957) while the Patriots ranked 5th (1803).
Much like the running offenses, the rush defenses are going to end up canceling each other out. The interior of Donald and Suh are a nightmare for any team. Plus, Donald is the best pass rusher in the league, tallying up 20.5 sacks on the season. The Rams will need him to get to Brady and quick.
I expect the Patriots will force Jared Goff beat them in the air. They will stack the box and probably have a DB covering Gurley out the back field. If there is one thing the Patriots do well it’s taking out the other team’s best players. In the AFC Championship Game, Belichick schemed Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce out of the game, holding them to a combined 4 catches on 74 yards and 1 touchdown.
I firmly believe this is going to come down to the quarterback play. Almost everywhere on the field these two teams are evenly matched except under center. I get the feeling the lights will be a little too bright for Jared Goff, and he is going to get big game butterflies. I don’t think Tom remembers what butterflies are.
The Patriots should get off to an early lead and make the Rams rely on the passing game, forcing Jared Goff to step up to a level I just don’t think he is ready for. I am going to take the Pats to win this game and their sixth Lombardi trophy.
Spread: Patriots -2.5
O/U: Under 56.5
